On the occasion of LYSI’s 70th anniversary its history has now been published in a book. Unfortunately it is only available in Icelandic.
The book is entitled “Ocean Gold” and refers to the value of the fish oil as well as the golden colour of the oil. The authors are the experienced journalists Helga Gudrun Johnson and Sigurveig Jonsdottir.
Fish oil was an important product for Iceland for hundreds of years both for domestic use but also for export. In the nineteenth century fish oil was viewed as a source of A and D vitamins and later on its beneficial effects through the EPA and DHA fatty acids were discovered. The company had its ups and downs through the decades but in the end a strong company emerged basing its operations on one of the most modern and technologically advanced factories to be found worldwide.
